Two versions are available: a PDF copy that you can easily distribute to your students and a Word doc file that you can modify for use in your class or lab.īecause Stellarium is open-source, I provide these copies as an open source document. Instead I have wriiten a quick introduction to Stellarium that provides a tutorial on getting started, and some descriptions of the toolbars and hotkeys. I find the wiki doesn't address a lot of simple questions about getting started with Stellarium and the User Guide is quite lengthy.
Stellarium has a 300-plus page User Guide (included with the program download) as well as a Wiki. Stellarium ( download here) is a multi-platform program (Windows, Mac, Linux) that has multicultural resources, can operate telescopes, can show satellite paths, has a multitude of object databases, and is scriptable for user-defined animations and guided tours. While commercial software exists that will do marvelous things, I prefer to use free, open-source software that students can also use so I can demonstrate how to use the program as we discuss various topics during class.
