Stellarium ( download here) is a multi-platform program (Windows, Mac, Linux) that has multicultural resources, can operate telescopes, can show satellite paths, has a multitude of object databases, and is scriptable for user-defined animations and guided tours. While commercial software exists that will do marvelous things, I prefer to use free, open-source software that students can also use so I can demonstrate how to use the program as we discuss various topics during class.
